One blade that cuts both ways
A swing-blade sawmill runs a single circular blade that pivots between vertical and horizontal. It saws boards straight off the log with no band to tension, track or swap out.
The blade is tungsten carbide tipped. The tips are sharpened as you go and can be replaced when they wear, and tips and sharpening gear (opens in a new tab) are on Bailey's main store.
Set the mill up over the log
The tracks and end-frames stand around the log, on the ground or on simple supports. You take the mill to the timber instead of hauling logs to a mill.
Cut down, swing the blade, cut across
The circular blade makes the vertical cut, then swings 90° to make the horizontal cut that frees the board. The log is not turned between cuts.
Lift off a square-edged board
Each pass releases a sawn board or beam. Cutting from both sides, a double cut, gives boards twice the width of a single cut.

The lightest carriage in the lineup, for hobby farms, small woodlots and first-time sawyers. Manual start, with the side-winder and slabbing attachment as options. Cuts 14.5 ft as standard; 3 ft corner extensions, sold separately, take it to 20 ft.

How much does a portable sawmill cost?
It depends on the model and the package: the board size you need and extras such as the slabbing attachment, track extensions or, on the 6-16, corner extensions. Swing-blade or band sawmill: what is the difference?
A swing-blade sawmill like the Lucas Mill uses one circular blade that cuts vertically, then swings 90 degrees to cut horizontally and free the board, so the log never has to be turned. The mill frame is set up around the log where it lies. A band sawmill runs a thin continuous band around two wheels: it cuts a thinner kerf, but the band has to be tensioned and tracked, and the log is usually loaded onto the mill and turned to saw each face.
Which size portable sawmill do I need?
Start with the biggest board you want to cut. The 6-16 and 6-18 cut boards up to 6.3 × 12.6 in, the 7-23 up to 7.9 × 15.7 in, the 8-30 up to 8.5 × 16.9 in, and the 10-30 up to 10 × 20 in. Lucas Mill publishes board size rather than a maximum log diameter, because the mill sets up around the log. For very large or irregular logs, tell a specialist what you have.
Does Bailey’s sell the electric Lucas Mills?
No. Lucas Mill’s electric models, the 8-15 and 10-15, run a 400 V, 3-phase, 60 Hz Lafert motor, which is not a common supply in the U.S., so Bailey’s no longer carries them. Every Lucas Mill Bailey’s sells is petrol powered.
Can a portable sawmill cut slabs?
Yes. Every Lucas Mill swing-blade takes the optional slabbing attachment, which runs a slabbing bar from the mill’s own engine. For regular wide-slab work, Lucas Mill also makes the DSM23 slabbing mill and the DSSM Super Slabber, which cuts slabs up to 9 ft (2.7 m) wide.
Do the blades need sharpening?
Yes. The blade has tungsten carbide tips, and Lucas Mill supplies a sharpening kit (a mini grinder with a diamond wheel on a factory-set bracket) so you can sharpen the tips regularly on site. When the tips wear out, the blade is re-tipped. There is no band to tension or track.
How long a log can I mill?
The standard cut length is 20 ft (6.1 m) on every model except the 6-16, which cuts 14.5 ft as standard; 3 ft corner extensions, sold separately, take the 6-16 to 20 ft. Lucas Mill’s 2 m track extension kit gives 8 m (26 ft) on the 6.1 m track, and rail sets can be linked for longer logs.
What warranty comes with it?
Lucas Mill gives its machines a three-year limited warranty against faulty parts and workmanship. Engines are covered separately: Kohler EFI engines for at least three years from Kohler, and Vanguard engines for three years from Briggs & Stratton.
