What Is a Swing-Blade Sawmill?
A swing-blade sawmill uses a single circular blade that pivots — or “swings” — between horizontal and vertical cutting positions. Unlike a bandsaw mill, which runs a thin continuous band around two wheels, a swing-blade mill uses a rigid TCT (Tungsten Carbide Tipped) circular blade to make both rip cuts and cross-dimensional cuts on the same log without repositioning. The result is a simpler machine with fewer moving parts and dramatically less blade maintenance.
The TCT Blade Advantage
Bandsaw blades require constant attention: sharpening after every few hours of cutting, regular tension adjustment, and precise tracking alignment. A dull or poorly tracked bandsaw blade wanders in the cut, producing wavy lumber. TCT blades on a swing-blade mill, by contrast, can run for hundreds of hours between tip replacements. There is no sharpening equipment to buy, no tension gauge to monitor, and no tracking to adjust. For owner-operators working remote sites, this translates to more cutting time and far lower ongoing costs.
