How a swing-blade sawmill works
A Lucas Mill runs one circular blade on a carriage that travels along aluminum tracks above the log. The blade makes the vertical cut, swings to horizontal and makes the cut that frees a square-edged board. Cut from both sides, a double cut, and the board comes off twice as wide.
The tracks, end-frames and carriage come apart, so you carry the mill to the timber instead of hauling logs to a mill.

Where is Lucas Mill made?
In Australia. The Lucas family founded Lucas Mill in 1994 in Wooragee, Victoria, and the family-owned company still builds its mills there. Bailey’s, in Woodland, California, is the sole Lucas Mill distributor for the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Do you sell used Lucas Mills?
Bailey’s sells new Lucas Mills, which come with Lucas Mill’s warranty and the full set of rails, end frames, toolbox and blade-sharpening grinder. Used mills rarely come up for sale. If budget is the concern, financing is available, and a specialist can help you pick the smallest model that cuts the boards you need.
What is the difference between a swing-blade mill and a band sawmill?
A swing-blade mill like the Lucas Mill uses one circular blade that cuts vertically, then swings 90 degrees to cut horizontally and free the board, so the log never has to be turned. The mill frame is set up around the log where it lies. A band sawmill runs a thin continuous band around two wheels: it cuts a thinner kerf, but the band has to be tensioned and tracked, and the log is usually loaded onto the mill and turned to saw each face.
Which Lucas Mill should I buy?
Start with the biggest board you want to cut. The 6-16 and 6-18 cut boards up to 6.3 × 12.6 in, the 7-23 up to 7.9 × 15.7 in, the 8-30 up to 8.5 × 16.9 in and the 10-30 up to 10 × 20 in. Our mill chooser draws each model’s biggest board to scale, or a specialist can help you pick.
Does Bailey’s sell the electric Lucas Mills?
No. Lucas Mill’s electric models, the 8-15 and 10-15, run a 400 V, 3-phase, 60 Hz Lafert motor, which is not a common supply in the U.S., so Bailey’s no longer carries them. Every Lucas Mill Bailey’s sells is petrol powered.
Do Lucas Mill blades need sharpening?
Yes. The blade has tungsten carbide tips, and Lucas Mill supplies a sharpening kit (a mini grinder with a diamond wheel on a factory-set bracket) so you can sharpen the tips regularly on site. When the tips wear out, the blade is re-tipped. There is no band to tension or track.
Can a Lucas Mill cut slabs?
Yes. Every Lucas Mill swing-blade takes the optional slabbing attachment, which runs a slabbing bar from the mill’s own engine. For regular wide-slab work, Lucas Mill also makes the DSM23 dedicated slabbing mill and the DSSM Super Slabber, which cuts slabs up to 9 ft (2.7 m) wide.
What warranty comes with a Lucas Mill?
Lucas Mill gives its machines a three-year limited warranty against faulty parts and workmanship. Engines are covered separately by their makers: Kohler on the 8-30 and 10-30, and Briggs & Stratton on the Vanguard-powered 6-16, 6-18 and 7-23. Your written warranty sets the full terms.
